1. John Williams (Star Wars and Indian Jones, left me singing in the shower)
2. Ennio Morricone (Good the bad and the ugly, Themes from Romeo and Juliet
and The Mission)
3. Jerry Godsmith (Man From Uncle and Star Trek Voyager)

One I do not like that much is Vangelis, who sounds a bit "electronic" to
me.

These guys have just lifted the movies they contributed to a new level. They
should be given more awards and money if possible.

So you *are* a troll. Although "Godsmith" was almost as funny as the two
movies you chose to illustrate his talents.

P.S. Next time, you should try to avoid giving away the game by mixing
up Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota.

You *should* be apologizing for top posting, and for attributing to
Ennio Morricone a score that was actually written by Nino Rota. I don't
think that any serious musician would put John Williams in the top three
film composers if that list fails to include (as one example) Bernard
Herrmann. The great majority of Williams's scores are pastiche at best.
Of the movies that I have seen that were scored by John Williams, the only
ones in which I found the score particularly memorable were _Jaws_,
_Family Plot_, and _Catch Me If You Can_.

Ok, I seem to have forgotten an l in Jerry Goldsmith. Since I am making
another posting, I would also like to mention Bill Conti (Dynasty, Falcon
Crest and Rocky) and some British people: Patrick Gowers who wrote the theme
to the Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett. That theme with the horses
riding in is just the standard Victorian Sherlock Holmes sound. Also Ken
Howard and Alan Blaikley for the Miss Marple theme for the 80s and 90s tv
series.

Now I promise I won't write postings for a while since I have written so
many recently.

I am sorry. I seem to have gotten Nino Rotta and Morricone confused. Well,
nobody is perfect. I realise that these people i mentioned are very, very
"comercial", but they have done their jobs well, and we all remember them
and their films even if they are comercial. They have made the soundtracks
to some of the most famous films and Tv shows in history. And that is no
small thing. I can't see how this makes me a "troll".

If you are throwing Morricone under the bus, thems fighting words. Once Upon

not possibly work without it, and only it.

I'll go with Herrmann and Morricone and a wild card.

The wild card: Miklos Rozsa (BEN-HUR, EL CID, KING OF KINGS,
SPELLBOUND, DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE LOST WEEKEND, THE KILLERS, CRISS
CROSS, DESERT FURY, THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE PRIVATE
FILES OF J. EDGAR HOOVER, THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD, FEDORA, etc.)

I must agree that the Hitchcock guy, Bernard Herman, rather appeals to me.
He should be on the list no doubt. Tiomkin I had almost forgotten. Sorry. I
guess I am not old enough to remember their music, even if I remember and
enjoyed the movies they contributed to. Also, I must confess that even if i
liked the soundtracks I mentioned, there is a tendencey in modern big films
to be a little to "pompous" in the music. I am thinking in particular of
films like U-571, in which there are big horn sections as the submarine goes
to sea. Socalled hero-music. Especially when there is some form of army
scene. I just don't like "patriotic" music. That really annoys me sometimes.
It seems to me that great films that are a bit understated are better, such
as Escape from Alcatraz, 3 days of Condor and The French Connection. I
stand by my views of the composers I mentioned though, even if all their
works doesn't meet the same standard. Ask the Star Wars fans whether they
didn't like williams' music.

It took this long for someone to mention Rozsa? He would be my #1.
Second would be Korngold. Maybe Bernstein (Elmer) at third. At the
opposite end would be Steiner and Hefti.
