Here is my issue: i just received a SD ext. hd, followed directions on
how to hook it up, but it won't work. The recorder is set to internal
and external, when i turn it on it seems to recognize the drive as the
light to the bottom left blinks for a minute, but then the light shuts
off and the recorder does not recognize it. I've troubleshot a bunch
of things but can't find what's wrong? any ideas anyone?

First of all, you are speaking of the XL-DVDRAM?

Second, did you set menu item #2 Firewire:Connection in the menu to
External Drive (this is the one I always forget...)

Third, are you running the 744 on external power?

Make sure the drive case is either the Prolific or Oxford chipset.
The Prolific will record fine but playing back is an issue. I have
used both with good success.
