When Richard does it, it's a typo. When I do it -- admittedly much
more often -- it's a brain fart. I'd needled him in a different
thread for typing "affect" when he meant "effect." In this thread I
was just twisting the knife a little. Sorry for the confusion. It's
out of my system now and I feel much better.

I have no desire to go to Paris, or most places in Europe. If I did

go there, I'd start with Italy, primarily because of the food. Not
that I hate French food, just don't prefer it. Actually I'd start off
the continent, in Scotland, with a round of golf at St. Andrews. My
dislike of the French comes second-hand but is comprehensive; art,
politics, experience of friends, etc.

I'm not fond of cities in general. Our recent vacation took in four
national parks (Yellowstone, Tetons, Yosemite, Grand Canyon) and three
rounds of golf (Nevada, Pebble Beach, New Mexico---have played in 27
of our 50 states now, hope to eventually get to all 50). I'd rather
enjoy the great outdoors than look at some 300-year-old buildings,
although certain of those would be of interest. I intend for example
to always scrupulously avoid NYC, LA, and Vegas. We do look forward
someday to visiting DC, however, and a return trip to Montreal would
be nice someday.

Roger Ebert (yeah, yeah, I know that mentioning his name will lose me lots
of points around here) pointed out a major difference between _Psycho_ and
_Friday the 13th_: in the former, the murders were filmed from the point
of view of the victim (and up to the point of the first one, the character
who gets it is basically the only character with whom we have any
identification at all up to that point), while in the latter, the murders
were filmed from the point of view of the murderer. So instead of the
horror of the victim, we are expected to feel the sick joy of the killer.
That, btw, is one of the reasons why I don't like _Frenzy_ all that much.

We could go back to our Peeping Tom discussion from here.

The difference is that I have demonstrated sufficient facility with the
language that it's fairly reasonable to assume that, for example, I know
the difference between "affect" and "effect" (especially since I gave you
a dictionary entry for the nominal form of the former).

In my copy (3d edition), p. 73 (in the chapter "An Approach To Style"):

8. Avoid the use of qualifiers.
_Rather_, _very_, _little_, _pretty_ -- these are the
leeches that infest the pond of prose, sucking the blood
out of words. The constant use of the word _little_
(except to indicate size) is particularly debilitating;
we should all try to do a little better, we should all
be very watchful of this rule, for it is a rather important
one and we are pretty sure to violate it now and then.

I recommend that you return your copy and exchagne it for one that doesn't

I won't have to 'exchagne' it, because it does indeed contain the
section that you quoted. My rash conclusion was the result of
not finding the word in either the index or the list of 'misused
words and expressions'.
