I'm mixing a short film in the coming days. The producer rented the
gear for me but mistakenly picked up the AT 835ST for the boom. I have
read that this mic can be switched to a mono mode which is more
directional. Am I doomed trying to grab clean dialogue with this mic?
He may not be around to rent something different and I'm not throwing
any money at this project. Anyone know this mic well?

I own this mic personally. Unlike some stereo shotguns, you can in
fact use the mid capsule by itself, without having to energize phantom
power on both the M and S capsules. The only real disadvantage is
having to use the XLR-5 to 2x XLR-3 adapter cable and taping it down
to prevent it from hanging loose - but obviously a minor issue.

As far as performance goes, the mic is slightly noisy and has lower
overall gain than some mics (much more expensive ones, like 416,
Neumann, etc...), but for its price point is a good deal and competent
mic.

You can use the mid capsule only for mono.
