|
|
Hi, there,
I am about to embark on the great adventure of HD video production.
I'm pretty settled on my choice on the Sony HVR-Z1U (or possibly one of
the lesser expensive models in the same Sony line).
I'm going to buy a VTR with it, Vegas and I'll build a workstation.
However, I haven't seen online electronics stores that offer financing.
Can anyone recommend some reputable places online that offers financing
for video production stuff?
I actually have enough cash to pay for this equipment, but because of
the vagaries of the rest of my project budget, I'd like to keep as much
of it on hand as possible.
I've noticed on the sonystyle.com site (their online store), they offer
12 month 0% interest financing, but HVR-Z1U cams are not listed for
sale.
Anybody have ideas or experiences that might be relevant.

An HD Camera will cost you around what.. $150k.
The HDV camera you mention ought to be a lot less.

Still, Sonystyle.com does have a great program if you meet their credit
criteria.
However as the small print says,
..........................................................
"*12 months, no interest on all Sony products
This promotion applies to the purchases of anything on Sonystyle.com from
April 29, 2005, and June 30, 2005. No minimum purchase required. There is no
prepayment penalty.
<<<<SNIP>>>>
If balance on these purchases is not paid in full before the expiration of
the 12 month period, Finance Charges will be assessed from the purchase date
at the standard Rate APR of 21.99%. For Accounts not kept current, the
Default Rate 24..99% APR will be applied to all balances on the Account.
..........................................................
In HDV, only the HDR-FX1 is available through Sonystyle.com
The Z1U and the playback deck are not listed, thus not available through
that particular credit program.
For that amount of money, (between 10K and 15K) you might consider shopping
around for a bank that has the best rates available for an unsecured credit
card. Then buy the gear with the card.
Make your payments as you would for the no interest Sony plan, plus 12
percent and you will wind up with a very small balance at the end of 12
months.
You see, to most lending institutions, consumer and pro-sumer video gear
isn't really considered great collateral. They just depreciate too fast. So
you will get a crappy interest rate.
But good luck and good hunting.

Interestingly, a local shop has a sort of lease-to-own option for that
camera.
I don't think they're out to cheat anybody, but it's harder to figure
out exactly how much you're paying for the camera.

Second mortgages are usually a decent source of relatively cheap
funds. And, regardless of what you use the money for, it's tax
deductable.

This type of financing is very common now. I see TV and print ads
promoting it for furniture, home electronics, etc.
They are counting on the fact that many people will forget about the
balloon payment, at which point they immediately start applying that
huge interest rate.
All they need is that first day over the deadline at 25-30 percent to
make the first "interest free" year very profitable.

The sum of the lease payments, plus any up-front money. Also look to
see if it's a lease-to-buy with the typical $1.00 payoff.

Yeah, what Larry says.
Plus make sure you get them to tell you whether it's an "open ended" or
a "closed ended" lease.
Do you OWN research on the difference and make sure you understand which
you're signing.
The difference in what you owe will be HUGE when you get to the end of
the term.
For what it's worth. |

Well the Zu1 is HDV, not really the same as HD at all by tens of thousands of
dollars.

Sure there's a difference. Sony's version of HDV is 1080i though, same
as HDCAM. BBC are cutting Z1 footage with HDCAM 750 so as you'd be hard
pushed to see the difference. Evaluation by price tag these days is a
poor substitute for pragmatic expedience or viable business modelling.

Buy it for cash, and then expect it to drop in value to nearly nothing in
2 - 3 years.

When I really wanted a "never-never" plan, I've used these 12-month plans,
and then at the 11th hour (month) transferred them to a zero- percent
credit card and waited that period out with the minimum payments.
The trouble is that eventually you _do_ have to pay - - and b by pushing
it off into the future, the gear is nearly always worth less than you owe.

And a damn good thing, too. As the dollars moved from media and meetings to
Internet presence during the nineties, not a few companies around here
(Chicago) with large investments in equipment, staff, and/or real estate
have struggled to survive. Compared to the decade plus amortization of film
cameras and much the same for BetaSP, Guidry is right about planning to
amortize your equipment in two years or so nowadays.
