Pretend it's 1924. Your family is sitting in the darkened at Wilmette
Theatre, 1122 Central Ave., Wilmette, watching the first film
adaptation of "Peter Pan." A pianist near the front is sending music
echoing through the theater.
Flash forward to 2008, specifically 7 p.m. Saturday, July 12, and 11
a.m. Sunday, July 13. A color-tinted version of that original film is
on the screen and David Drazin is at the keyboard highlighting the
action with music as he has done for other Silent Film Nights.
A silent movie version of "Peter Pan" is screened this weekend at the
Wilmette Theatre.
"He's like a rock star," General Manager Chad Byers said of Drazin.
"He gets standing ovations every time."
Byers noted that this historic version of James M. Barrie's classic
"influenced all the film versions that followed. It's a newly-restored
print from about 10 years ago."
The July 12 screening will be followed by a film discussion by Pioneer
Press film critic Bruce Ingram. At the Sunday morning showing,
Wilmette Theatre co-owner Carole Dibo, an actress, will read the
subtitles.
Byers described the showings as "a pure visual experience of a great
children's story."
Tickets are $10.
