I hear they are making yet another Sherlock Holmes movie. I have seen so
many I want to puke, from Arthur Wountner, Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett etc
etc. When will it all end? Why must they remake The Hound of baskerville
over and over again. It's like a nightmare. How do they get the money?
And to continue on the same note. Why must there also be endless remakes of
Agatha Christie stories? For Christs sake we all know who the killer is
before the film has started. What possible good can come of it. Every
generation of actors rush to participate.
Had they made spoof like the Gene Wilder version of Sherlock Holmes or an
original re-write of some sort with an unexpected angle or twist. But they
must regurgitate the same old stories untill we all drop dead of exhaustion.

Well, they are great stories. I don't deny that. Of all the 5-6 Sherlock
Holmeseses I remember, Jeremry Brett was the best I think. And of the 3 miss
marpleses i remember on the top of my head, i like the one from 50s and 60s
the best: margaret rutherford. The one from the nineties was also good. The
old Miss marple was more of an action woman, while the nineties version just
seemed to sit around with very intelligent eyes and pretend that she was
ignorant of her own genious. The latest one I am a bit unsure of, she is
younger than the previous ones. But they have good supporting actors in the
latest series. But Rutherford also had good supporting actors. In fact I
remember seing the nineties miss marple appear as a supporting actor in the
rutherford series. She was of course younger then. Then there are the
poirots. There is the guy from murder on the Orient Express, then there is
Ustinov and finally David Suchet. I think it would be a tie between Ustinov
and Suchet. But after first reading the books, then seing 3-4 version of
the same story, i now recognize the plots. But perhaps I am a bit unusual.
Perhaps most people don't remember the stories.

Heck, I didn't know who the killer was in Mousetrap until I saw it
performed. I suspect that most people don't know most of her stories.
That said, one problem with doing a Christie novel is that it pretty
much has to be a period piece; the difference in our technologies
would pretty much prohibit taking one of her old novels and just
trying to set it in modern day. |

Here is an episode of a Holmes story with Ronald Howard
http://www.englishcollection-backup.com/sherlock2/sherlock6.ram (watch with
real player). Howard is quite good for a 50s version, except for the fact
that the 30 min episodes are too short for a story to develop. Howard is of
course the son of the great Leslie Howard of Gone With The Wind and Scarlet
Pimpernel fame. In fact he looks like a clone of his father.

A version of "Ten Little Niggers/Indians | The Last Weekend | Then There
Were None" with an ending true to the novel would be quite a surprise
to most viewers. The killer would be still the same, but ...

Indeed.
I'm a Holmes fan and own several different editions of the Canon and
have read each story many times in the last 50+ years.
Basil Rathbone is my favorite screen Holmes, even though many of those
Universal episodes are, shall we say, not the best.
Nevertheless, Rathbone looks right and gives a good performance in
each.
Nigel's Bruce's Watson is endearing, if non-canonical.
The more recent TV episodes with Jeremy Brett are generally excellent
(although he does really ham it up in a few of the last ones).
Watson was ably represented by two different actors (David Burke &
Edward Hardwicke) and is a far cry from Bruce's slightly dotty
interpretation. |

People who really like Conan Doyle or Dame Agatha read the novels and
stories over and over again. I know because I am a fan of both of them,
also of Dorothy Sayer whose Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane have been
curiously neglected since the last BBC production was released in the
late 1980s.
Who done it is really irrelevant to such as me. It's watching beloved
characters do their thing that is the pleasure, that and the different
interpretations different actors bring to those characters.

Is there someone who's holding a gun to your head to make you watch them

Otherwise, why not simply NOT watch them, and let others who love them to
decide for themselves whether they'd enjoy watching another version.

By this logic no one should ever stage a production of Hamlet again. |

I must admit, you have me there. I have not so much sought these films out.
They have just appeared on television while I was watching. And you know if
I press the off switch on the remote, my life becomes instatntly
meaningless.
But yes, I get your point. I may have exaggerated a little in the heat of
the moment. I appologise to all Christie fans out there.

Well... now that you mention it...
I recall a guy in high school doing a monologue from a spoof of
Hamlet, and it was seriously unfunny. It wasn't just that the poor
kid couldn't act, it was that the entire concept was a complete dead
fish. And don't go dragging "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern" into this,
because that was satire, not spoof.

You got me again, Fred. I've only read Conan Doyle's Sherlocks and those
repeatedly. Early speculative fiction like "The Lost World" or "20,000
Leagues" or any of Mr. Wells's early books are huge gap in my general
literacy. I do have a pretty good working knowledge of "Looking
Backward" if that is to my credit at all.

Well, drat. TLW is one of my favorite books, and by far my favorite
Doyle. First read it at just the right age, probably 10, having seen
the Irwin Allen movie in a kiddie matinee my dad took me to when I was
probably 6.
