Has anyone else heard about this, or heard of any kind of follow-up?

If true, this is quite a discovery. Not on the level of the recent
"Metropolis" discovery, of course, but still proof that this stuff can even
turn up after so many years.

But, if I read the article correctly, this print still lacks the
original opening, in which everyday Italians sing their hearts out
before we get to the hotel restaurant scene with Groucho Marx and
Margaret Dumont.
I've long thought that one place the opening would survive is - Italy.
Has anyone looked there? |

Not that it proves things one way or the other, but the MGM cutting
continuity for "Opera" (a microfilmed copy of which resides at the
Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.) describes the original
opening in detail. It's summarized in the trivia section for this
movie at the Internet Movie Database. (And yes, I was the one who
contributed the IMDb trivia entry.) |

It's news like this that makes me wonder how many, if any, "old" films
(especially precode films) we have today survive in their original form?
When you consider the multiple reissues that many of these films had, plus
the numerous edits made for early television, it's very hard to know for
sure. A case in point is the 1947 film "Miracle on 34th Street". The master
print, held in Fox's vault (and used to master the TV as well as video and
DVD copies), is apparently missing at least two sequences that have been
spotted in other prints.

The odds of something like HUMOR RISK showing up at this point are very
slim, because there were so few prints made (possibly only one, if Groucho's
story is to be believed).
What amazes me about A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, and HORSE FEATHERS, is that these
are films that played in thousands of theatres across the world. How uncut
prints of HORSEFEATHERS still haven't turned up, and A NIGHT AT THE OPERA
has been recovered sixty years after it was edited, is beyond me.
