I received my Zaxcom Digital Stereo Wireless system a few weeks ago
and am having problems getting it to work with my Sound Devices 442
mixer when fed from the 442's balanced TA3F outputs. I can send tone
cleanly but dynamic audio is distorted as transients pass through 0dB
on the 442 and -20dB on the Zaxcom transmitter. Has anyone else
experienced this issue?

After speaking with Zaxcom, Sound Devices, and the company that sold
me the unit and fabricated the TA3F to TA5F cable, I came to the
conclusion that the Zaxcom is most likely working correctly, so I sent
the Sound Devices 442 to Sound Devices to be bench tested. The 442 was
found to be in proper working order. The vendor who sold me the Zaxcom
and made the TA3 to TA5F cable told me the TA3F to TA5F cable has is
"straight wired" with no additional circuitry, attenuation, or
alternative pin configurations, so it either "works or doesn't work".

I came to the conclusion that all 3 components are not defective, but
there is an incompatibility somewhere in the signal path. I did
several web searches over the past few weeks and only last night
stumbled upon a posting on another forum that exactly described my
issue when using a 442 and the Zaxcom unit. Several replies into the
post I saw this message that indicated that some folks who have had
this issue have been able to feed the Zaxcom from the full-sized XLR
outputs if the 442's TA3 outs were not working for them:

"The main difference between the XLR and TA3 outs on the 442 is that
the TA3s are impedance balanced and the XLRs are Transformer
balanced.

Could be that the TRX900AA just doesn't like impedance balanced
outputs. But with the number of units that are out there, this is the
first I have heard of them not liking each other."

At this point this is all that I have to work with. I may have to use
the full-sized XLR outputs to make the Zaxcom work with the 442. This
is disappointing to me because I want to use the TA3's since they were
designed to feed wireless units and the full-sized XLR's are there for
a second camera hard-cable feed.

But, at this point, I just want the Zaxcom to be compatible with my
442 as I've spent $5000 on a mixer to camera link, promoted it to my
client base, and I can't currently can't use it.

you can use -10 db unbalance out to ffed the zaxcom
you will loose 6 db of headroom , but you still be able run up to + 18 db on
the 442 scale ,
or you can use hirosa line out balance instead
